The shift to streaming has really accelerated over the past few years as consumption habits shift towards digital and social media, and fans have more teams, leagues, brands, and services to choose from. In 2022, we witnessed this momentum with Prime Video, delivering over 300 days of live sports broadcasts across 6 territories, which translates to over 20,000 live events for customers. We anticipate that this trend will only increase and the number of live events streaming on Prime Video will more than triple this year.

In March 2022, we became the first streaming service to secure a package of exclusive national broadcast rights from the NFL, making Prime Video home to Thursday Night Football starting in the 2022-2023 season. The historic deal was dubbed a “turning point” by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and was the biggest leap forward for streaming sports events so far. In addition to streaming exclusivity on Prime Video, the deal expands the TNF package from 11 to 15 regular season games and also includes one pre-season match per year. We are open to experimentation on behalf of fans and leagues, and integration with the AWS platform and Twitch allows us to test new technologies that improve the viewing experience, reach new and younger audiences, enable those audiences to engage, and help organizations achieve more ambitious business goals.

With Prime Video in 2022, we had many notable successes bringing our own new live sports broadcasts around the world to our offering and setting new streaming records. We streamed the Roland-Garros tournament on Prime Video in France for the first time in May, and in the summer we launched a range of top-flight soccer offers, including UEFA Champions League matches in Germany and Italy, and Ligue 1 in France. Another highlight for us was the demonstration to millions of British sports fans of Emma Raducan’s historic rise to the US Open Women’s Single Final in September. The Championship Final has become the most watched tennis match in the history of Prime Video. As for Thursday Night Football, the match between Green Bay Packers and Arizona Cardinals at 8. of the week had the highest average minute viewership in TNF history on Prime Video and Twitch. The reception continues to be extremely positive, and I am particularly proud of our team, which provides world-class production, outstanding execution and a variety of talent for all of our proposals.

Much of what we do is only possible with Prime Video thanks to the power and flexibility of our service and Youth Citizenship. We are always working with the client to learn how to use new innovative technologies to improve the viewing experience and engage sports fans more deeply. For example, in our NFL league fixtures, directly as part of our live streaming, we offer fans multiple audio options and X-Ray features that give audiences access to expert analytics, replays, fan opinion polls, Next Gen Stats powered by AWS. And live data analysis, previously only available to coaches and commentators. With the Premier League, fans can switch between live matches or watch up to three streams simultaneously on different devices.

We also offer integrated live match stats and highlights and match information via X-Ray, plus the ability to listen to the match without comment via our Stadium FX audio channel. Features like these have been extremely well received and continue to find a very good response among sports fans that are always looking for additional options. We’ll continue to look for ways to surprise and delight viewers, and we believe the opportunities are increasing with streaming TV and Youth Citizenship. How do you predict – will the shift towards streaming continue or will this trend change in 2022?

I don’t expect the industry to completely shift from the traditional model to streaming TV commercials overnight, but we’ve come a long way and are seeing tremendous momentum with live sports on Prime Video. With streaming, you can reach audiences wherever they are and create personalized experiences that can change the way we watch sports.
